Technologies
There are many technological new solutions related to different sets of programs, developed using open source logic.
Thick Server - Thin Client
It's very efficient open source technology which enables to create many working computer places with only one powerful PC.
If in a powerful computer there's the LINUX operating system installed and its server is properly prepared, it's enough to have one good PC and many other weak ones. The main server contains all the information, data and all the necessary programs, which will be used by users of all the network computers.
The weak computers are connected to the main PC through an usual network. Through the network from the main PC (server) to other PCs (clients) a user's desktop view is sent, meanwhile the server recieves all the infomation about the events that are fired by mouse and/or keyboard.
That's how with one poweful computer and a bunch of old machines it's possible to create 3, 4 or more working places fitting nowaday office computing needs.
System merits:
- Only one hard disc (of the main PC) is sufficient. In this way the electricity is saved and an ecological aspect is contributed.
- To connect a PC to this network is enough a very weak processor (300mHz) and just 48Mb of the operating memory.
- All data is kept in only one PC, which can have many users, for each of whom a desktop environment is dedicated. In this way data become easily accessible and managed - every user can reach public files of another user and the creation of backups becomes simplier. Each system's user can get to his/her desktop from any other PC connected.
- Programs occupy less place, because they must be installed in only one PC, therefore much time for software administration and other recourses are saved.
- The supervision of all the PCs is much simplier, since in case of a poblem just one (the main) PC must be repaired.
- The main PC can fulfill mail, web or printer server's functions as well.
- There is less waste in the surroundings since old machines are used/reused and so, instead of being thrown up, are recycled. In this way the environment is saved form unecessary waste.
